Upper Nyack, NY (November, 14, 2024) — The Global Healthy Living Foundation (GHLF) is excited to present innovative and transformative research at the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Convergence 2024 in Washington DC. This marks GHLF’s ninth consecutive year presenting at ACR, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of PatientSpot, the patient-powered research registry formerly known as ArthritisPower. This year’s presentations focus on approaches to improve care for individuals with chronic inflammatory diseases like polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and psoriatic arthritis (PsA), while also examining how emerging technologies can enhance patient outcomes.
Adding to the significance, GHLF’s CreakyJoints® community celebrates its 25th anniversary of advocacy for arthritis patients and caregivers, along with nearly a decade of participation at ACR. “These milestones are a testament to the impact of working together to produce research that is not only rigorous but also accessible, relevant, and meaningful to patients,” said CreakyJoints Co-founder Seth Ginsberg.
A key focus of GHLF’s research at ACR this year is on PMR treatment and understanding gaps in patient care. One study, “Baseline Evaluation of Diagnoses and Prescribing Patterns in Polymyalgia Rheumatica,” reveals a widespread reliance on steroids for PMR and PMR with giant cell arteritis (GCA), but often without additional therapies that could help reduce the negative long-term side effects of steroid use. This underscores the need for continued research for new therapeutics and the importance of clinical trials.
“Patient care for PMR can be improved, and there is potential to reduce the burden of steroid use,” said Laura Stradford, MPH, Associate Director, Patient Centered Research and Epidemiology, GHLF. “This finding highlights the need for more comprehensive PMR treatment options that go beyond steroids to provide a balanced approach that we know patients want.”
Digital health innovations are also at the forefront, with GHLF’s multi-year WEAR study showcasing how Fitbit data, combined with patient-reported outcomes, enhances RA monitoring without added burden. “It’s all about making health care more personalized and centered around the patient,” said Shilpa Venkatachalam, PhD, Chief Patient-Centered Research Operations and Ethical Oversight Officer at GHLF. “Patient-reported data plays a crucial role in enabling individuals who live with chronic disease, researchers, and clinicians to provide and gain valuable insights that help guide treatment decisions and support proactive disease management throughout the patient journey.”
Another study examined the feasibility of Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) for musculoskeletal diseases, using the PatientSpot app to enable patients to report symptoms and treatment progress between visits. The study found high levels of satisfaction among both patients and office staff, suggesting that RTM has strong potential to enhance patient engagement and continuous support between clinical visits. “RTM’s value in many chronic conditions lies in proactive management and timely interventions, helping health care providers respond quickly to symptom changes, optimize treatment plans, and improve outcomes for musculoskeletal conditions,” said Angela Degrassi, Senior Manager, Patient Centered Research Operations and Engagement.
Additionally, this research will show the importance of preventing infections and managing other health issues that often come with these diseases. These insights can help researchers, doctors, and patients maintain disease stability and improve overall health by treating the whole person.

Patient Perspectives: Real-World Experiences
In addition to presenting scientific abstracts, GHLF will feature four patient poster presentations at ACR Convergence 2024, sharing real-world insights from those living with chronic inflammatory diseases.
“These perspectives are crucial for understanding the practical impact of disease management on daily life, offering valuable insights that can guide more responsive, patient-centered approaches in research and treatment,” said Dr. Venkatachalam, who lives with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Sarah Shaw, Associate Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and JP Summers, Senior Patient Advocate, Community Outreach Manager, will present their experiences with ChronicHue, a community established by GHLF to support Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals with chronic illnesses. “We know that health care disparities exist. We know that certain chronic illnesses are hitting historically marginalized populations and emerging ones harder. We created this space to help open up and normalize health discussions that might not be happening in our communities,” said Shaw.
Shelley Fritz, Patient-Centered Engagement and Insights Manager, GHLF will present her journey using systematic research methods to understand her rheumatoid arthritis and gastrointestinal symptoms. By conducting a structured literature review, Shelley found that a low FODMAP diet could help manage her GI symptoms, demonstrating the empowering role that self-directed, high-quality research can play in guiding personal health decisions.
